How to Make a QR Code
A QR code is a small square picture that a phone camera can read in a second. Scanning it can open a website, join a WiFi network, start an email, dial a number or save a contact. This free QR code generator makes standard codes that work with the camera app on iPhone and Android, with no app to install.
- Choose what the code should do: open a link, join WiFi, send an email, call a number or save a contact card.
- Type the details. The code updates as you type.
- Pick colors, a size and an error correction level if you want to change the defaults.
- Click Download PNG for screens and documents, or Download SVG for print.
- Scan the code with your phone before you share or print it.
Tips for a QR code that scans every time
- Keep strong contrast. A dark code on a light background is the safest choice. Very light colors, or a light code on a dark background, fail on many scanners.
- Leave the white border. The empty margin around the code helps the camera find its edges. Keep it at 4 modules or more.
- Do not print it too small. About 2 cm (0.8 inch) is a sensible minimum for a code someone scans from a short distance. Use a larger code for posters.
- Shorter data makes a simpler code. A short link gives a code with bigger squares that scans faster than a long one.
- Test before you print. Scan with more than one phone if you can.
Frequently asked questions
Is this QR code generator really free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many codes you make. The codes are static, so they never expire and nothing is tracked.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The QR code is created inside your browser, so your link, WiFi password or contact details never leave your device.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Use PNG for websites, social posts, slides and documents. Use SVG when you print on posters, banners or packaging, because SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size.
Which error correction level should I choose?
Medium (15%) is a good default. Choose High (30%) if the code will be printed on a surface that may get scratched or dirty. Higher levels make the code denser, so keep Low or Medium for long links.
Why will my QR code not scan?
The usual causes are low contrast between the code and the background, a code that is printed too small, a missing white border around it, or colors that are inverted. Use a dark code on a light background, keep the border at 4 modules or more, and test with your phone before you print.
Can I add a logo in the middle of the code?
This tool does not add logos, because a logo covers part of the code and can make it fail on some scanners. If you add one in an image editor, choose High error correction and test the result carefully.
